For years the debate about the lessening of streetlights has been circling around varied communities, and for years I was in agreement with the argument that streetlights should lessen - however, my opinions about this have changed since an hour ago.
I just drove thirty minutes through a rainforest covered road in utter black darkness which was sliced through by my car's high beams. I have never been so terrified, however that also may be due to the fact that my sister was driving, seeing as I had alcohol in my system.
In that moment of time, as I clung to the door handle and prayed, I also questioned my opinions on whether or not streetlights should be existent. In that moment of time I also came to the conclusion that while I am on the road I would rather be able to see the path to my destination rather than the display of my astrological horoscope.
If it were not for the reflective light patterns on the side of the road though, I do not think we would have safely stayed on the right side of the road. With that said, I suppose I am arguing that lessened streetlights would be perfectly fine if there were much more reflective road assistants on the side of dark roads.
I suppose this entry just came to be from my blatant paranoia. And what made things worse is that we were on our way back to the hotel from watching the movie Carrie. As disturbing as It were, the drive home was worse.
In all actually though, I am now abiding by the fact that the worse thing to have happened today apart from the absence of streetlights on a dangerously dark and narrow road is the fact that the hotel cleaner had stolen my favorite - used - pair of underwear.
Streetlights - though they hardly exist in places most needed, are great tools which ensure safety of drivers, however they are also not convenient as they lead my underwear thief to safety.
